Some Common Questions
Please feel free to reach out to any one of us with your questions, but here are some answers to some frequently asked questions.
Can I participate in a Regional or Provincial tournament without being associated with a high school? No, because the mission of OSDU is to promote debating in schools, your team must represent a public or private school.
Can my team consist of one student from one school and the other student from a different school? No, both students on your team must come from the same school. This avoids the formation of 'super teams', which could make the competition unfair.
My school does not have a debate coach. Can I still attend the Regional and Provincial tournaments? Yes, you can attend with a parent or adult chaperone. However, you must clear this with your school principal. Unfortunately, due to liability, many principals insist that your chaperone is a teacher.
Can anyone go to the BP Provincials? Yes, for the BP Provincials, which takes place in late October each year, there is no qualification tournament, so anyone can attend. However, the places are limited and the competition level is high, so you need to sign up early and prepare well.
Can anyone attend the CP Senior Provincials? No, for the CP Senior Provincials, which takes place in February each year, you must qualify by attending your Regional tournament, which usually take place in early December.
Can anyone attend the CP Junior Provincials? Yes, for the CP Junior Provincials, which takes place in March, and which is a one day tournament, there is no qualifying tournament, so all students are welcome to participate.

When I am at a tournament, can I use my cell phone or laptop to do research? No, you cannot use any electronic device to prepare for a round of debate. If you are caught doing so, you will be dismissed from the tournament.
When I am speaking, can I use my cell phone? Yes, you can use your cell phone to time yourself; in fact, it is encouraged because it helps you to keep track of your time. Also, while listening and making notes, it is difficult for a judge to always give accurate time signals to you.
I would like to go to the Regionals and the Provincials, but I cannot afford the cost. Does OSDU have money to help me? Yes, on a case by case basis, OSDU is able to help you financially. To do so, you need to reach out to your Regional Coordinator.
