Ontario Student Debating Union
Our Mission, Our People, and Our Code of Ethics

OSDU mission
The Ontario Student Debating Union grew out of the Canadian Student Debating Federation (CSDF), which began with a tournament in 1967 at Trinity College, Port Hope. From these origins, OSDU emerged to promote competitive debating in Ontario for all students in middle and high school by offering workshops, local tournaments and by hosting the Regional and Provincial tournaments. This enduring commitment of OSDU comes from the belief that "the spoken word has evoked emotion, inflamed the spirit, inspired faith and fired the imagination," which is "perhaps our best legacy to have survived the centuries." Tom Lawson, Founder of CSDF.

Code of Ethics
We expect all students to attend debate tournaments with an open mind and a sincere respect towards those who hold a different opinion. If a student shows disrepect, the student will be dismissed from the tournament, and after an investigation, if the allegation is true, the student will be banned from participating in OSDU tournaments. It is imperative that all students understand that the complex issues of our times can only be resolved when people come together with an abiding respect for each other.
